What do you think has been the most interesting change in your organization as a result of the impact of digital technologies and the internet?
I think making all raw material available for the journalists at their desktop has been the biggest revolution. Journalists now evaluate and edit their own material – and they trigger processes sending this material to all different media (radio, TV, net, new media).
How have staff roles changed over the last 18 months?
We now demand multiskills in nearly all areas in news: Photographers are also editing, journalist’s run multiple media processes, craft editor’s are also system experts and media managers, and technicians are “octopus” people handling multiple functions in playout. Very few people have lost their jobs because of new technology, but nearly all have got changed jobs.
What will be the next big challenge for your organization?
I think optimizing workflow and cutting cost in operations will be the next big challenge. Then we have a couple of big tasks coming with interfacing to the new metadata/digital archive structure – and new formats (HD, 4k) are coming sooner than we think. Boy scouts- be prepared…
